Satisfaction Survey - ICAO Intensive Course

I'd like to share with you some of the comments from pilots that have taken the face-to-face intensive course for the ICAO English test over the last few months. The course is very intensive, you need to have an intermediate level of English as a minimum in order to get the most out of it, the teaching method follows European standards, it's a different level to what is usually found here. However, if you manage to stay focused and keep up with the pace of the course you will be ready to sit the test! 100% of students said they would recommend the course to another pilot and 93% of the students rated the course 10 out of 10. In the last 5 years, 90% of the students who have taken the course have managed to pass. Happy studying!

“I really enjoyed the course as a whole, but the thing that I got most out of was the technical aspects covered!”

“I learned how to study for ICAO, even though it is a well-known subject, the course was excellent in understanding what I need.”

“My progress was remarkable, I learned how to study for the ICAO test, now I'm fine-tuning the last details and it's time to take the test.”

“The face-to-face course with Mister Colin was excellent. I improved my pronunciation, technical vocabulary, grammar and all the criteria assessed in the ICAO test. The methodology in the book is extremely efficient.”

“I would like to thank the instructor Mister Colin, for his patience and dedication.”

“Mister Colin has excellent knowledge of the subject and is very attentive and helpful.”

“Thank you so much for your attention and dedication to the course, I believe that I have progressed so much and with your tips I will achieve my goal. Thank you very much, cheers.”

“The course is excellent. It helps the student with all the questions assessed in the ICAO exam. The teacher is very well prepared grammatically and technically to teach the classes and help the student to pass the test. The book that is used is excellent as well.”

“The course as always was very good and productive, just like Mister Colin, once again I felt prepared to revalidate my exam.”

Another milestone reached, I have now given more than 9,000 hours of instruction to pilots to help them pass the ICAO English Proficiency Test.

It's been nearly 9 years working in aviation, more than 27 years since I gave my first English class. This year has been very productive so far, the school I was working at in São Paulo shut down so I was forced to move the Intensive ICAO Course to a new home at ICALearning. Until now nobody that has done the Intensive Course with me in the new school has failed the ICAO test, 100% of those who got their results have passed, it's been incredible. In August I managed to fit in an intensive course exclusively for helicopter pilots, at Heliparque, again everybody passed.

I am still doing preparation classes via Skype and all those students have been passing as well. My online course at www.icaoqrh.com is booming, everybody is getting good results and saying that the course really helped them to prepare. More and more pilots have been downloading my mobile application "ICAO Test", it's had more than 13,000 downloads now. At the start of October I spent three days at the Brazilian Institute of Air Traffic Control in São José dos Campos at a Seminar to discuss Aeronautical English. It was invaluable to learn about the new trends and research in the sector.

Thanks to everyone for their support and help and I am looking forward to reaching 10,000 hours!

Mister Colin was one of the pioneers in teaching English for aviation in Brazil. He has been an English Teacher since 1992 and started to prepare students for the ANAC test in 2011. He has already given more than 8,000 hours of instruction to more than 1,800 pilots. He is a member of the International English Association for Civil Aviation and has taught the “Presential ICAO Intensive Course” since 2015.

ICALearning was founded by Christopher Coates in 2012, who was one of the creators of the ICAO test in 2007. The school is focused on ICAO preparation, courses for Flight Attendants, Business Classes, Translations and Interpreting Services, and is very highly regarded in the sector.

ANAC Symposium

Mister Colin participated in the Commemorative Symposium organised by the Brazilian National Civil Aviation Agency (ANAC) and the Brazilian Institute of Airspace Control (ICEA) to commemorate 10 years of proficiency requirements for Aeronautical English in Brazil. It happened at the Brazilian Institute of Airspace Control (ICEA) in São José dos Campos in the interior of São Paulo. I had the opportunity to discuss the new test personally with the ANAC team that develops the test and to get to know all the examiners from ANAC, Azul, CAE, Cultura Inglesa, EJ, EPA, GOL, IBEU and SUPPERB. It was a unique and wonderful experience.

At the symposium ANAC presented the new Santos Dumont English Assessment and explained everything about what happens behind the scenes at ANAC and their plans for the future.

We also participated in several workshops. The first was a debate with ANAC about the content, format and tasks of SDEA and everyone had the opportunity to ask questions. In the second and third we analyzed several radio communications and discussed what had gone wrong with the communications.

After the Symposium, Mr. Colin participated in a barbecue with the ANAC team, the examiners and teachers from ICAL Languages, Clear Sky Aviation English and Vector Aviation English. It was a perfect end to an incredible event that I will never forget.

THE NEW TEST IN BRAZIL

PART 1: AVIATION TOPICS

In the first part of the test, "Aviation Topics", which is conducted in an interview format, the change is that while the old test had seven questions these have now been reduced to three questions in the new test, however, the examiner may ask more questions if they think that the candidate has not spoken enough.

PART 2: INTERACTING AS A PILOT

In the second part of the test, "Interacting as a Pilot", the pilot will interact with the air traffic control, the call sign is ANAC 123. You can ask for each audio to be repeated once. The change is that while there were three situations in the previous test the new test now has five. All the audio situations have been updated.

The format of the first three situations is the same as the previous test. You will hear the controller and you must read back. Then the examiner will explain a situation to you orally that you need to communicate to the controller. Then you will hear the controller’s response and you need to reply. When you have answered the examiner will ask what you understood.

The change is in situations Four and Five of Part 2. Firstly you will hear the controller and have to read back as before. However, when the examiner presents you with the problem to be communicated to the controller, the examiner will show a photo and you will have to explain the problem that appears in the photo. You will have to communicate the situation and your intentions and then respond to the controller as in the first three situations. When you have answered the examiner will ask what you understood.

PART 3: UNEXPECTED SITUATIONS

The third part of the test, "Unexpected Situations," assesses your ability to understand real emergency situations and explain those situations. You will hear each situation twice automatically. The only thing that has changed in this part of the test is that the call signs are no longer ANAC123, now they are from several different airlines. All audio situations have been updated.

You will hear three emergency situations. After each situation the examiner will ask what you have understood and ask a question about the situation. When you have answered the question about the third situation the examiner will ask you to make a comparison of all three situations to explain which is the most difficult.

PART 4: PICTURE DESCRIPTION AND DISCUSSION

In the fourth part of the test, "Picture Description and Discussion", the examiner will show you a picture for you to describe. The only change is that after finishing your description the examiner can ask up to five questions about the situation in the photo, in the previous test there were only three. All pictures have been updated.

UPDATED MATERIAL

All of Mister Colin's material has been updated according to the new ANAC test in Brazil.

Twenty new situations from Part 2 have been created for use in the online course, the face-to-face course, and the Skype classes.

Both the Android and iOS apps have also been updated:

The books for the face-to-face courses have also been updated:

The online course now has:

  • 980 audios in total with 8 different accents;
  • 49 questions and answers from Part 1;
  • 55 situations from Part 2 with questions and answers;
  • 33 situations from Part 3 with questions and answers;
  • 11 photos from Part 4 with descriptions, questions and answers;
  • 9 grammar lessons;
  • 22 explanations of the situations that appear in the test.

Happy studying!

Mister Colin

I’d like to offer my congratulations to Caetano who got Level 5 in the ICAO Test. He’s the first Mister Colin student to get a level 5 in the new ANAC test. Nowadays it’s getting harder to get the highest grade. Well done Caetano for your accomplishment!
